DPU women win Hammond tourney
DePauw University's women's basketball team knocked off Denison to win the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament Sunday.
The Tigers trailed 22-20 late in the first half before Caitlin McGonigal scored eight points in a row in 1:25 to give DPU the lead.
From that point forward, the Tigers never looked back.
DePauw opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 37-25, but Denison went on a 14-4 run of its own to close the gap, 41-39.
But the Tigers pushed their lead back into double digits only to see Denison burn them for a 7-0 run to make it a 56-53 contest with about seven minutes to go in regulation.
Emily Marshall scored six straight points for DPU to push the Tigers' lead to 62-54 with 3:44 to go in the game.
Cassie Pruzin nailed a three-pointer with 2:37 left in the contest to make it a 10-point game, 67-57, and the Tigers connected on all six of their free throws down the stretch to put the nail in the coffin.
The Tigers shot 48.2 percent from the floor against the Big Red and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half.
Denison shot 43.3 percent in the game.
The Tigers also held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding Denison, 41-28. DPU was also 15-of-19 from the charity stripe.
McGonigal led DePauw with 14 points, and Liz Bondi and Jenna Fernandez each scored 12.
Bondi led the way for DePauw in the rebounding department, pulling down eight boards.
Suzy Doughty tied her career high with nine assists and also tallied four steals in the game.
Kristen Sheffield and Amber Hill led Denison with 15 points each, and Sheffield led the Big Red on the boards with five.
Sheffield was named the tournament's most valuable player, and both Sheffield and Hill were named to the all-tourney team.
McGonigal and Doughty were DePauw's representatives on the team.
