DePauw men beat Wabash

The DePauw University men's basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 92-82 win over Wabash College at home Tuesday.

The Tigers and Little Giants were tied eight times in the first half before the Tigers scored the last nine points of the half to take a 47-38 lead into the break.

Tony James hit a three-pointer to start the 9-0 run before Austin Brown nailed a layup and a jumper.

Matt McDonald ended the run with a layup.

The Tigers led by as many as 16, 81-65, after a jumper from Brown.

The Little Giants wouldn't go away quietly, though, as Brian Maloney hit a pair of free throws, Gary Simkus hit two jump shots and a free throw, and Andrew Zimmer connected on a layup with 2:46 remaining, ending a 9-0 Wabash run that shrank DePauw's lead to 81-74.

After a DPU timeout, Brown knocked down a three-pointer, and Wabash would close the gap no tighter than seven points for the duration of the game.

Brown led DePauw with 22 points, and Stephen Schott scored 18.

James scored 14 points in the game, while Mike Moore added 12 and Reid Sakel scored 11.

Brown also had eight rebounds, helping DePauw to a 35-32 advantage on the boards.

Moore tallied six assists in the game, and James had five.

Cloverdale High School graduate Chase Haltom scored 13 points for Wabash.

DePauw improved its lead in the all-time series with Wabash to 113-73-1 and won their 19th game in the last 23 meetings with the Little Giants.

The Tigers will open the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference season Saturday when they host Centre at 3 p.m.
