South Putnam crushed by Cadets

Saturday, December 9, 2006

Turnovers helped keep the South Putnam Eagles boy's basketball team still seeking it's first win of the season as they fell to the Cascade Cadets, 71-48.

South committed a total of 25 turnovers in the contest with 16 of those coming before halftime.

"We have to learn to value each possession," coach Brian Gardner commented after the game.

South Putnam was led in scoring by Noah Boswell, who despite battling illness, managed to throw in 16 points.

Ben Anderson closely followed with 13 points, and Adam Neese contributed 11.

The Eagles kept the score close as the first half slowly ticked away.

Within the last 1:20, there were seven stoppages due to fouls by both teams.

When the halftime buzzer sounded, South Putnam only trailed by three, 29-26.

"The first two quarters were probably out best two quarters of the season." Gardner added.

Cascade opened the second half with a long ball and short jumper from Jason Mink and a close two from Brad Suter.

South's first score of the half came with six minutes remaining when Adam Neese connected on a basket and brought the score to 36-28.

Cacade built a 10-point lead midway through the quarter on the strength of baskets from Mink, Suter, and Luke Simpson.

As the quarter came to a close, Cascade had built a lead of 12 points outscoring South 21-12 in the third.

South Putnam saw the fourth quarter quickly get out of hand as it seemed everything the Cadets threw up found the bottom of the basket.

The Eagles seemed to loss control of their game, as they found themselves against the ropes. Turnovers as well as an unkind hoop didn't;t help their cause.

Cascade ended up going on a 9-2 run to end the fourth and walk away with the victory.

South Putnam had no answer for the duo of Jake Daugherty and Suter, who combined to score 30 points for the Cadets.

The Cadets' Mink contributed a solid 11 points as the Cadets' took the game 71-48.

South Putnam might have come up short but Gardner saw some good things on the court.

"Our kids played hard tonight and we continue getting better." Gardner said after the contest.
