DePauw men slip past Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The 22nd DePauw Tigers came into their Wednesday afternoon game against the Kenyon Lords expecting to easily handle the 5-5 squad but ended up sneaking away with a victory, 53-52, at Tomsich Arena in Ohio. The victory improved the Tigers to 8-1 for the season.

The fourth quarter heroics for DePauw came from senior guard Reid Sakel when he buried a 23-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Tigers the victory.

Sakel finished the game with 14 points and two rebounds. The Tigers were led by Austin Brown with 18 points and five rebounds

The Tigers Stephen Schott cleaned the glass and collected 10 boards in the game. He also score seven points while playing 33 minutes.

For the Lords, Korey Haddox score a team-high 14 points with two assists and five rebounds. Dave Jolson had nine points for Kenyon while Jim Arce had eight points.

Dave Knapke scored just six points, five under his season average, and pulled down eight boards off the bench. Josh Klinger also scored six points but also had five rebounds, two steals and one block.

The Tigers shot 39 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the arc. Solid free throw shooting also helped the Tigers as they made 10-14 for 71 percent.

Kenyon also shot a low percentage from the field. They shot just 31 percent from the floor and 28 percent from behind the arc. The one bright spot for the Lords came at the free throw line as they shot 80 percent for the game.

Another disappointing aspect of the game for DPU was in the offensive rebounding stats. DePauw was out rebounded by the Kenyon Lords, 43-31, including 18-7 on the offensive side.

DePauw will travel to compete in the Tampa Bay Shootout on Dec. 29-30. Their first game will be against the University of Dallas at 5 p.m. Dec. 29th.
