DPU women beat Lords in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- On Thursday, the fifth-ranked DePauw Tigers women's basketball team improved to 9-1 and recorded it's eighth straight win, defeating Kenyon in the first game of the Surf 'N' Turf Classic in San Diego, 68-40.

The score might not show it, but DePauw had it's hands full early on in the contest.

Kenyon led by as many as nine points after going on a 10-0 run early in the first half.

DePauw came rushing back and closed the half out on a 20-2 run to take a 30-21 lead at halftime.

Liz Bondi led the Tigers with 11 points, four assists and seven rebounds.

Bondi was 4-of-6 from the field and also shot 3-of-5 at the free throw stripe in Thursday's tournament contest.

She was followed by Emily Marshall with 10 points, who also pulled down seven rebounds.

Suzy Doughty scored nine points in the victory and Cassie Pruzin score seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

Bridget Bailey was strong coming off the bench, scoring eight points and hauling in three boards in only seven minutes of play.

Kenyon was led by Anne Dugan, who scored a game-high 14 points in the loss.

Eva George also contributed eight points and four boards.

DePauw held the Lords to only 19 second-half points, shooting a dismal 11 percent from behind the arc.

Kenyon also went 0-for-5 from the free throw line in the second half and shot 22 percent for the game.

The Lords bowed to the Tigers on the boards also as DePauw outrebounded Kenyon 44-27 in the contest.

As a team, DePauw shot 26-of-52 from the field while holding the Lords to just 17-of-50 shooting from the floor.

With the victory DePauw will face Medaille at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST) today in the second round of the Classic at Pointe Loma Nazarene University.

Medaille defeated Salve Regina, 58-38, to advance to the second round.

The Tigers will need to keep a close eye on 6-foot-0 forward Amanda Baker, who is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds a game for the season and has led the Mavericks in score in all but one game.
