DePauw men suffer SCAC loss

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- A slow start put the braked on the chances for the DePauw University men's basketball team Friday as the Tigers managed to fall to Sewanee on the road, 77-70.

Sewanee scored the game's first 13 points and trailed only one time in the win.

The Tigers dropped to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Sewanee improved to 2-7 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Sewanee scored 13 points in the opening 2:23, but the Tigers battled back to close the first-half gap to three before heading into intermission trailing 43-39.

Sewanee extended its lead to 10 early in the second half before DePauw went on an 11-2 run to close within one, 59-58. Brian Oilar's three-pointer with 6:30 remaining capped a 5-0 run and gave the Tigers their only lead of the game, 64-63.

DePauw trailed by only three with less than one minute left in the game, but Sewanee hit four free throws in the final 42 seconds to secure the victory.

Austin Brown paced DePauw with 21 points while Stephen Schott added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Tony James also had eight assists.

Joey Garcia led Sewanee with 22, while Spencer Rowland added 19 and Chris Eddy had 12.

Sewanee shot 52 percent from the field while the Tigers connected at 44 percent.

The Tigers will face Oglethorpe on the road Sunday at 1 p.m.
