Tiger Cubs slip by North Putnam, 49-43

Friday, January 26, 2007

Greencastle's boys' team cruised into North Putnam's homecoming Friday night and put a halt to the celebration, defeating the Cougars, 49-43, in a very physical game.

North went into halftime down two points as Brayden Dahlstrom fed brother Griffen Dahlstrom for a bucket to end the second quarter and take the score to 27-25 in favor of Greencastle.

Zack Hedrick scored a three-pointer 22 seconds into the third quarter to give North the lead but Greencastle's Brennan Burks quickly responded to give the lead back to the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle's next score came off a brilliant inbounds pass to Kendall Faust for the easy bucket. Greencastle got help from Zack Smiley in the quarter, as he aggressively went to the glass and grabbed three rebounds. He also created opportunities for teammates by keeping the ball alive and playing tough defense.

The Cougars had two attempts to pull within two at the end of the third but two consecutive misses of an inbounds feed by Griffen Dahlstrom kept the Tiger Cubs lead at 37-33.

The fourth quarter started with Brayden Dahlstrom hitting a three-pointer to inch North within a point of the lead but Greencastle always seemed to have an answer for the Cougars.

Then a game that was already physical became even more so. Griffen Dahlstrom suffered an injury to his eye but continued to stay in the game through obvious pain.

Peek acknowleged the injury could be severe and had no timetable for when Dahlstrom might be ready for action again.

As the quarter went on, North was cited for a technical foul at the 3:15 mark as their frustration built. Brayden Dahlstrom stole the ball and went to the rack to move North to within three.

Greencastle continued to play tough and controlled and as the quarter came to a close, they stood victorious with Burks closing the deal with two free throws.

The first half saw both teams come out strong, with the first quarter going neck-and-neck.

Brayden Dahlstrom scored North's first four points of the game but Erick Burgeson and Burks tied the game with two jumpers.

Greencastle tied the ball game again with great interior passing and Burks getting the open shot. Zac Remsburg hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give Greencastle the lead, 17-15.

Brian Blaydes hit a put back to tie the game. The action was back and forth going into half time.

North Putnam and Greencastle played a very physical but controlled game. Both defensive efforts were solid and aggressive.

"I thought we played good defensively tonight," Peek said. "I have no complaints."

North Putnam will play travel to North Montgomery today with the junior varsity starting at 6 p.m.
