CLAYTON -- On Thursday, the North Putnam Cougar girls' varsity basketball team traveled to Cascade hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Tri-West Bruins, and advance to the semifinal round of the sectional.

Tri-West had defeated the Cougars earlier in the season, 45-38.

The Cougars played a solid, aggressive game against the Bruins Thursday, staying close throughout the first three quarters of the game, but Tri-West was able to pull away in the fourth quarter to end North Putnam's season, 60-45.

North Putnam out-rebounded Tri-West, 31-24, and moved the ball well on offense, passing for 11 assists, but the Bruins hit 46 percent of their shots from the field, while the Cougars hit 35 percent, and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

"We played really hard tonight," commented North Putnam coach Kevin Smith after the game. "We hung in there with them for three quarters, but they went on a run in the fourth quarter.

"Defensively, we were getting tired and having some break downs and we let them have some easy buckets. Then we got to the point where we had to scramble and be more aggressive to get the ball back.

"We have only two seniors and the rest are freshmen and sophmores, and they all did a nice job tonight," Smith added.

North Putnam had two players scoring in double figures, with Brook Miller leading the way with 14 and Carlye McGaughey with 11. Taylor Alles and Shawna Johnston followed with nine points each, and Briana Stein closed out the Cougars scoring with two points.

Johnston grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Miller and Alles pulled down four rebounds each.

Miller also had a game-high five assists, and McGaughey had three steals.

The Cougars ended the year with a season record of 7-14, and this was the final game for seniors Miller and Chelsey Greene.
