Cascade heads to regional

Only one girls' basketball teams from the West Central Conference remain in the Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls' Basketball Tournament.

Heading into Friday, three WCC girls' basketball teams remained in the state tourney in Speedway, Monrovia and Cascade.

The Sparkplugs were defeated by Indian Creek in sectional semifinal action Friday, 56-54. However, Monrovia knocked off Tri-West, 60-55, while Cascade beat South Vermillion, 51-41, as both WCC teams advanced to the finals of the Class 2A Cascade Sectional Final.

Cascade managed to emerge the victor, knocking off the Bulldogs, 50-48. The Cadets are 13-10 overall this year and will take on Mitchell (17-6) in the first round of the Forest Park Regional Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Sparkplugs tied for conference honors this year with Cloverdale as both teams sported 5-1 records. Monrovia and Cascade were second at 4-2 each while North Putnam was fifth at 2-4. South Putnam finished sixth with a 1-5 mark and Greencastle was seventh at 0-6.

Speedway's Katie Jones led the conference in scoring with an average of 17.4 points per game while Cloverdale's Hannah Monnett finished second at 14.5 points per game.

Monnett's teammate, Ashley Koosman, led the league in rebounding with an average of 10.1 per game while Monnett was second at 8.3. Greencastle's Kelsey Hennette finished third at 8.2 per game.

Speedway's Lauren Miller led the league in assists with an average of 9.1 per game while Greencastle's Cassie Alspaugh was third at 2.9 per game. Cloverdale's Chelsie Haltom also finished fifth with an average of 2.8 per game.

Haltom also led the league in steals with an average of 2.8 per contest while Monnett was tied for second at 2.7.

Speedway's Kara Tierney led the league in field goal percentage at 52.1 percent, hitting 85-of-163 shots. South Putnam's Leeah Butts finished fifth at 45.2 percent, having hit 32-of-77 shots.

Jones also led the conference from beyond the arc at 38.4 percent, hitting 73-of-190 three-pointers. Cloverdale's Kristin McCammon was third at 34 percent (31-for-92) while Monnett was fourth at 31 percent (34-for-108). Greencastle's Grace Fisher also finished fifth at 20.4 percent (17-of-56).

Jones topped the league leaders from the free throw line at 70.9 percent, hitting 39-of-55 free throws. South Putnam's Meghan Canary was second at 66.7 percent (66-for-99) while Monnett was fourth at 65 percent (53-for-82).
