Area swimmers move on to sectional finals

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- Not even old man winter himself could stop the first round of the Crawfordsville swim sectional Thursday night. Of the competing county schools, Greencastle and South Putnam will have swimmers advancing to Saturday's final.

The Tiger Sharks had numerous people advancing in multiple events and captured one first-place finish on the night.

Dustin Wood led the Tiger Sharks by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:03.53. Luke Crimmins also placed well for GHS by finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.50.

Miles Salman finished third in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:12.01 and Crimmins grabbed third in the 100-yard backstroke finishing in 57.63. Nick Stevens also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.95.

Greencastle also had two second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The 200-yard medley relay team of Crimmins, Wood, Salman, and Luiz Cardoso recorded a time of 1:45.52 while the 400-free relay team of Salman, Stevens, Mark Jedele, and William Dory slotted a time of 3:34.10.

South Putnam had two relay teams advance to the finals Saturday. The team of Clark Becker, Heath Pruitt, Cory McCallie, and Chris Smiley finished in sixth place in the 400-free with a time of 3:47.43, and the team of Becker, Smiley, Loren Ashcraft, and Jon Weaver grabbed another sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:38.90.

One of North Putnam's strongest finishers was Patrick Byrd who finished 11th in the 100-yard backstroke.

Sectional action will continue Saturday at Crawfordsville.
