Tigers set for Sewanee

The DePauw University men's basketball team needed to defeat Oglethorpe during the weekend to secure the top seed in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Tigers did just that, knocking off the Petrals at home on Sunday, 90-71. The win secured the top seed over Centre, which finished 12-2 in league play.

DPU now heads into the SCAC Tournament with the top spot and will face Sewanee in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday.

The first-round games will be played at Memphis University School. Games on Saturday and Sunday will take place at Rhodes College.

DePauw finished the season with a mark of 21-4, including 12-2 in league play. Sewanee was 6-18 this season, including 5-9 in the SCAC.

Other first-round games will feature Centre against Southwestern, Millsaps against Hendrix, and Trinity against Oglethorpe.

the Tigers knocked off Sewanee, 94-82, at home on Feb. 16. Joey Garcia and Casey Berry led Sewanee in scoring with 14 points each.

Garcia is the squad's leading scorer at 16 points per game, having totaled 351 points in 22 games. He increased his scoring average in league games to 16.2.

Spencer Rowland also averages 15.1 points while Ben Pursell averages 9.6 and Chris Eddy scores 8.8.

As a team, Sewanee shot 42 percent from the field this year (576-for-1,379) while allowing opponents to shoot 48 percent (639-for-1,321).

Sewanee is scoring 69.8 points per game but giving up 76.4 points.

Defensively, Sewanee is outrebounding its opponents this season but by the slimist of margins (34.2-34). Garcia leads the team on the glass at 6.5 boards per game.

In the victory over Sewanee, the Tigers got 20 points from Austin Brown.

Brown leads the team in scoring this year at 14.4 points per game while Stephen Schott averages 11.9. In addition, Mike Moore is averaging 11.2 while Reid Sakel is contributing 10.8 and Matt McDonald averages 9.2.

As a team, the Tigers are scoring 74.9 points per game while allowing opponents only 68 points.

DPU is shooting 47 percent from the field this year (670-for-1,418) while its opponents are firing 44 percent (627-for-1,422). However, the Tigers are shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc (189-for-493) while limiting opponents to just 31 percent (151-for-482).

DePauw is also outrebounding its opponents, 34.7-31.2. Schott leads the team on the glass, averaging eight boards per game.

The Tigers and Centre both finished with 12-2 conference records but the Tigers earned the top seed after the win over Oglethorpe.

Millsaps finished third in the conference standings thisyear at 11-3 while Trinity was fourth at 8-6. Oglethorpe and Hendrix tied for fifth with 7-7 records while Southwestern and Sewanee tied for seventh at 5-9 each. Rhodes was ninth with a 3-11 mark while Austin was 10th at 0-14.
