Edgewood romps Owen Valley for sectional title

GREENCASTLE -- After playing each other to a two-point game on Jan. 19, the fans that attended the Class 3A Greencastle Sectional Final Saturday between Owen Valley and Edgewood expected a close game.

But the fans didn't quite get that as the Mustangs roared out of the gates to a 14-4 first-quarter lead en route to a 68-52 win over the Patriots.

Edgewood -- the top-ranked team in Class 3A -- will now face Madison in the first round of the Washington Regional Saturday. Owen Valley's season ended at 17-8.

The Mustangs built on to their lead in the second quarter, taking a 31-18 lead into halftime.

Owen Valley outscored Edgewood, 19-15, in the third period to cut the lead to nine, 46-37, but the Mustangs outscored Owen Valley, 22-15, in the final period.

Garrett Butcher led the Mustangs with 23 points while Jacob Miller and Tom Weakley both had 10. Scott Pederson also had eight points in the victory.

Owen Valley was paced by Jared Maners' 17 points while Shawn Madorin finished with 14 points. Trace Temples also had six.
