DPU takes out Franklin

FRANKLIN -- The DePauw University women's softball squad finally managed to take the field Sunday after several cancellations, coming away with a sweep over Franklin.

The Tigers defeated the Grizzlies in the first game, 6-2, before shutting out Franklin in the nightcap, 11-0.

In the opener, DePauw scored four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead and added two runs in the top of the fifth to seal the win.

Lauren Curosh picked up the win for the Tigers. In five innings, she allowed two runs off four hits and one walk while striking out three.

Katherine Veatch pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three.

Offensively, DPU banged out 11 hits as Rachel Gill, Kaitlyn Davitt, Carolyn Bartlett and Lauren Rees all had two.

In the nightcap, the Tigers torched the Grizzlies for 10 runs in the top of the sixth to pick up the 11-0 rwin.

Megan Soultz pitched the shutout, giving up only three hits while walking two. Soultz also struck out nine batters.

Offensively, the Tigers tallied 14 hits as Gill, Davitt, Laura Schlensker and Kelly Schwerzler all had two hits.

The Tigers were supposed to open the season against Transylvania, but forced a cancellation.

DePauw will host St. Mary-of-the-Woods Wednesday, beginning at 3 p.m.
