COLUMBUS -- North Putnam's Eric Whitaker fired a five-over 77 to finish third overall at the talent-laden Columbus North Invitational on Saturday.  Whitaker's performance at Harrison Lake Country Club enabled the Cougars to place fifth in the team standings at the event, which featured some of the state's elite programs.

Sixteenth-ranked host Columbus North won with a score of 315, which was ten strokes better than third-ranked defending state champion Floyd Central.

"Harrison Lake played extremely tough today," North Putnam coach Keith Bodnarick said.  "Anytime you have two state-ranked teams shooting these kinds of numbers it shows the golf course was the winner today.  I thought our kids competed well against this caliber of competition and pressure today.  Eric's performance demonstrated that he certainly belongs among the state's top players."

The placing ran North Putnam's overall record this year to 45-9, bettering last year's school record of 39 wins.  The Cougars host Fountain Central Thursday in their last home match of the season.
