GHS golfers fall to Monrovia in opener

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

The Greencastle girls' golf team opened its season Tuesday at Windy Hill as it hosted Monrovia. The Bulldogs bested the Tiger Cubs, 221-247. Mon-rovia's Julia Porter was Medalist with 46.

The Tiger Cubs were led by Dana Norman's 47

"I was pleased with Dana's score, it was a large improvement from where she started last year," said GHS coach Brad Kingma. "She played a lot more this summer and it showed by being better ready for the start of the season."

While Kingma said that his team shows a need for improvement, he found some definite positives it its opener.

"The results show we have some work to do to get where we want for the season, but there were also some encouraging signs," he said. "We were shorthanded for this match as three of our returning players from last year could not participate (Liz Poor was sick and Jessica Pasho and Briana Martin had a schedule conflict with a cheerleading competition), so our first year players had to play a bigger role today. Norman and Kristen Field were the only players with playing experience."

Other scorers for the Tiger Cubs were Chelsea Samuels (57), Kelsey Murtagh (66) and Field (77). Kingma was especially pleased with Samuels and Murgagh in their first rounds.

"Chelsea and Kelsey played solid rounds for their first matches, and in particular Chelsea was playing in her first varsity level match as a freshman. As they work to improve their games I think they will be able to provide good scores for us this year," Kingma said.

Greencastle will return to the links at 8 a.m.Thursday when it travels to the Ravines Golf Course in West Lafayette for the McCutcheon Invitational.
