GHS boys' soccer dominates Monrovia in WCC opener

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

The Monrovia Bulldogs travelled to Greencastle Tuesday afternoon and were defeated by the host Tiger Cubs 8-0.

Griffin Moore put the Tiger Cubs ahead early, putting a shot past the Bulldogs keeper Bryce Wicks in the first two minutes of the game. Senior co-captain Adam Clute delivered the assist.

Monrovia's defensive effort stiffened until 10 minutes remained in the first half when freshman Spencer Moore delivered a crossing ball to Greg Lilly, who headed it in to put the Tiger Cubs ahead 2-0.

"The header from Spencer to Greg was an exceptional play at a time we really needed a goal. They were playing close with us for the first 30 minutes and the second goal was important for us heading into the break," said GHS coach Dave Lilly.

The second half was all Tiger Cubs. Lilly added his second of the match with an assist from freshman Jesse Elkins.

Senior co-captain Eric Davis , last season's leading scorer, put in his first goal of the new season off an assist from Buzz Deer to make it 4-0. Davis added his second goal of the night, unassisted, which was followed a minute later by Greg Lilly's hat trick to push the lead to 6-0. Senior Pat Eiteljorge provided the assist.

Next, Josh Bonebrake delivered an assist to fellow freshman Cody Watson and the lead was 7-0. The Tiger Cubs scoring concluded when Griffin Moore scored his second goal of the evening, putting in a ball that was deflected off the crossbar from a Lilly shot.

"Our play was better in the second half as we were able to relax a little. The underclassmen, especially the freshmen, were understandably nervous to start. They settled down and played a lot of quality minutes. I was happy with our effort tonight, but we still have a lot of work to do."

The Tiger Cubs will host Lebanon Thursday with the varsity match at 5:00 PM and the JV match at 7 p.m.
