Greencastle wins 8-1

Saturday, September 1, 2007

The Greencastle girls' soccer team hosted a potential sectional opponent Thursday night when Terre Haute North visited GHS. The Tiger Cubs' varsity and junior varsity were both victorious, by scores of 8-1 and 4-0, respectively.

In varsity action, the Patriots came out hard and fast and never let up through the entire game, so the Lady Tiger Cubs had to be on top of their game. GHS scored two goals in the first ten minutes of play by Hannah Spencer and Grace Fisher.

The next scores happened in the following ten minutes by Laura English assisted by Hannah Spencer and Hannah Spencer assisted from sweeper Becky Grivas.

The play was contained on the Patriots' end of the field most the night.

The next two goals were scored by Katie Farris and Hannah Spencer, both unassisted. This ended the first half scoring, and goalie Micki Ehrhardt accumulated 5 saves for the Tiger Cubs.

During half time, the Lady Tiger Cubs caught a quick rest and they were told that the Patriots were going to come back hard and fast again. When the half started, the Patriots had a fast drive towards the Greencastle goal but Ehrhardt denied the shot. The ball was punted out, and Hannah Spencer was able to capitalize by dribbling down the field and scoring.

Katie Farris scored the final goal for the Tiger Cubs with 21 minutes left in the game.

A few substitutions were made in the last 20 minutes of the game that did not affect the momentum for the Cubs. With less than two minutes left in the game, the Patriots had a breakaway run towards the Greencastle goal where some players got tangled up resulting in a penalty kick against the Cubs.

The Patriots' player took the shot and Ehrhardt deflected the ball but it hit the crossbar and bounced back in play. The kicker ran in and finished the play with a shot to the back of the net resulting in the Patriots' only score.

The Greencastle girls were upset to not have a shutout but they kept up the intensity for the 1:08 remaining.

"The score on the penalty kick was unfortunate, but it was a good learning opportunity that shows how important it is to follow your shot and how fast the defense needs to get back in to play after the shot," GHS coach Maurice McKee said.

In the JV game, three players scored for the Tiger Cubs. Sam Gordon had two goals, and Crystal VanArsdale and Ashley Smith each added one.

The Lady Tiger Cubs will be back in action on Tuesday September 4 at Terre Haute South, JV starts at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity will begin at 7 p.m.
