CLAYTON -- Not even swirling rains and a lightning delay could stop the South Putnam Eagles from capturing the West Central Conference on Saturday. South finished in first-place with a total of 365, with Greencastle finishing third with 436 and Cloverdale finishing in sixth with 468.

"Obviously everybody had to play in the same conditions. I thought our kids did a nice job, Eagles coach Debbie Steffy said. "Our kids worked hard this summer and worked hard this season. I'm proud of them and I'm happy for them that it's starting to pay off for them as far as the big meets."

Emily Zimmerman and Heather Hughes delivered two monster rounds for the Eagles. Zimmerman finished one-shot from taking top individual honors with a 79 and Hughes finished third overall with an 83.

But perhaps the most crucial round for the Eagles came from sophomore Grace Aker. Her career-best 93 helped solidify the Eagle win. Tosha Fisher shot a solid round, coming in with a 110 and Chelsea Clark tallied a score of 116.

"Grace Aker was the one that came through for us tonight," Steffy said. "Our other girls shot well too. It's a team thing. Everybody did what the needed to do for us to be able to win."

For the Tiger Cubs, Chelsea Samuels led the way with a 91. Dana Norman rebounded from a tough front nine to shot a four-over 39 on the back en route to her 92.

Kelsey Murtagh came through for the Tiger Cubs with an overall 112, while Diane Wokoun added a 141 and Ashlyn Archer carded a 142.

"We're really pleased. We knew coming in third was a realistic goal, so to make that we're very please. We got really good scores in the first three positions," GHS coach Brad Kingma said.

"We putted really badly today. We missed a ton of three-foot and under putts," he added.

Sophomore Kayla Langdon led the Cloverdale charge with a round of 93. Kate Chambers and Paige Cassida both finished with rounds of 120, with Elizabeth Wiley shooting a 135 and Jessica Hall carding a 166.

"We were shooting for third place so we're not happy," Cloverdale coach Ken Williams replied. "We didn't come very close to that.

"As a team we didn't perform well, the only redeeming part of the day probably was Langdon played extremely well I thought," he said.

"We'll enjoy this and then we'll refocus for the county and the sectional," Steffy commented.

Zimmerman, Hughes, Aker, Samuels, Noman, Landgon each earned all-WCC honors.

South Putnam will compete against Riverton Parke at 4:30 p.m. today, while Greencastle will host Owen Valley at 4:30 p.m. and Cloverdale will travel to West Vigo at 4:30 p.m.
