South Putnam sweeps Cloverdale

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

The South Putnam cross country team swept visiting Cloverdale Monday night. The boys' squad won 15-40, with the girls defeating the Clovers 26-30.

South Putnam's Dylan Hayes won the boys' race in a time of 19:11.

"They ran great. I think our top five all had personal bests tonight," South Putnam coach Andy Wise said. "I think they are going to be pleased because the time have finally dropped.

"We went through a stretch where it was so hot and it's hard to run good times -- they're happy to finally see some progress," Wise commented.

Shannon Egold continued her strong season as she led the pack to the finish with a time of 22 minutes. Cassie Davis scored the Eagles' other top five finish in third with a time of 24:17.

For the Clovers, Jenna Lewis finished in second place, running a 22:45. Chelsie Haltom finished in second with a time of 23:54, and Brynlea Mattocks finished in fifth-place with a time of 24:35.

"Chelsie Haltom ran fairly well," CHS head coach Sam Brown said. "She's been struggling with shin splint all year. She's just been giving me all she's got. I need my three, four and five runner to pick it up.

"They need to be down toward the 24, really 23 minutes. They need to get out there and compete a little bit harder than they're doing," Brown added.

On the boys' side, South Putnam took the top 11 positions en route to their victory over the Clovers.

Dylan Hayes led the Eagles with a time of 19:11. Tyler Shoffner finished second with a time of 19:19. Tyler Heavin finished third with a time of 19:28. Tanner Barr finished fourth in a time of 19:35, and Andrew Northrup was fifth with a time of 20:15.

"It was a really good day to run. Anytime you can compete against with another county school and to be able to take the top 11 spots, you have to feel really good about it," Eagles coach Brian Gardner said.

With the season coming to a close, the county and conference meet are on the coaches' minds.

"We're going to basically work on hills, some speed work and maybe go on some small runs just to try to prepare us," Brown said.

"We still need to get our times down, but I thought we ran really well today. We really worked hard last week. What we're doing in practice is going hard and getting ourselves ready for county and conference," Gardner commented.

South Putnam will host North Putnam at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while Cloverdale will host North Putnam and Eminence at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday.
