Putnam County Jail

Two people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* Michael Dane Bastin, 35, Greencastle, was booked in at 9:30 p.m. Sunday for public intoxication. He was released at 3:50 a.m. Monday on his own recognizance.

* David N. Williams, 38, North Salem, was booked in at 1:26 a.m. Monday for driving while intoxicated. He was released at 11:24 a.m. Monday after posting bond.

Sheriff's Dept.

Several accidents were investigated recently by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

* At 5:25 a.m. Thursday, a car swerved to miss a deer and landed in a creek.

Deputy Tom Helmer reported that Jerry Williams, Russellville, was southbound on CR 625 East when he looked down to get something in his car. When he looked back up, a deer was in the roadway. He swerved to miss the animal and veered off the roadway, striking some trees and landing in the creek. He was able to climb out of the car and reported minor injuries.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-10,000.

* At 3:27 p.m. Thursday, two cars collided on U.S. 231 south of U.S. 40.

Deputy Craig Sibbitt reported that Anthony Hofmann, Cloverdale, driving a 1991 Toyota, and Samantha Russell, Brownsburg, driving a 2007 Chevrolet, were both southbound when Russell stopped for a school bus. She reported that she was rearended by Hofmann. Hofmann said he could not avoid the collision.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-10,000.

* At 8:34 p.m. Saturday, a car struck a deer on CR 500 North near U.S. 231.

Deputy Josh Boller reported that Deletta Davis, Greencastle, driving a 2005 Ford Taurus, was westbound when the deer ran into the roadway and she could not avoid hitting it.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-2,500.

* At 3:10 p.m. Monday, two cars nearly collided, causing one to leave the roadway and strike a fence.

Deputy Doug Nally reported that Nathan Reeves, Greencastle, driving a 1992 Plymouth Laser, and Donald Kiger, Cloverdale, was headed in opposite directions on CR 1050 South near CR 225 West.Reeves advised that an oncoming vehicle was left of center, causing him to swerve. He said he was driving at a high rate of speed and swerved to avoid the vehicle, but lost control. Kiger said Reeves was left of center and was traveling at a high rate of speed. Kiger was not able to move over and witnessed Reeves run off the road.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-5,000.
