Tiger Cubs control tip, Cadets in 50-37 win

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Despite the absence of their second leading scorer, Greencastle came out on top in a key WCC tilt Friday night, besting Cascade 50-37 at McAnally Center.

Junior Drew Evens was out of the lineup, and a perusal of the roster handed out to fans prior to the game did not list Evens as a member of the varsity squad.

Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee attributed Evens's absence to "off the court issues," and added that he didn't prepare for the game any differently. Greenlee did state that, "We addressed it as a team and we're just going to go on."

Greencastle senior Brennan Burks is presented a ball commemorating his 1,000th career point. Burks and the Tiger Cubs defeated Cascade 50-37.

Prior to the start of the ballgame, Greencastle senior Brennan Burks was presented with a commemorative basketball in honor of breaking the 1,000 point barrier earlier against Edgewood.

The first quarter of play was tentative on both sides of the ball, with Cascade emerging on top, 12-11.

The second eight minutes wasn't any prettier, as both squads had difficulty finding the bucket. The Tiger Cubs and the Cadets combined to shoot 6-18 in the period, but behind six points from Greencastle's Austin Miller, the Cubs took the lead, 19-17.

After the half time intermission, things heated up a bit. Miller and Justin Bartrum, who replaced Evens in the lineup, combined for ten third quarter points, enabling Greencastle to extend its lead to six, 35-29.

A 13-4 fourth quarter run by the Tiger Cubs to end the contest put the ballgame out of reach and produced the 13-point margin of victory.

Greenlee was guarded in his praise of his ballclub at the conclusion of the game. "Anytime you get a conference win, it' s a good thing. Kyle Harlan came off the bench and did some nice things for us tonight...some of our other guys need to forget tonight and start fresh next week."

Greencastle was led in scoring by Miller who had 15 points. Burks added 14 and Bartrum collected 11.

Greencastle moved to 8-5 on the season and 4-0 in the West Central Conference. They host North Putnam Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
