Rev. James Corey Bean Jr., 72, Greencastle, died Saturday.

Born in Indianapolis, he was the son of James and Catherine Ann Bickham Bean.

He was a graduate of Centenary College in Shreveport, La., and Seabury-Western Theolog-ical Seminary.

After serving several parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana as a priest, he began a military career in the U.S. Army as a chaplain with tours of duty in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and at various posts in the United States. He received a master's degree in counseling from Long Island University and in 1979 accepted appointment to a civilian mission church in Wiesbaden, Germany for 11 years. Upon his return to the United States, he became vicar of St. Peter's Church in Pomeroy, Wash., until his retirement to Greencastle in 2000. He was a priest associate at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the local Civil War Round Table, the Society of the Holy Cross and supported several veterans' organizations.

Surviving are sisters, Catherine Bean and Edith Welliver and husband Glenn, all of Greencastle; and a nephew.

Services were private with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.

A memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at a later date.
