Area track and field athletes compete in Hoosier Qualifier event at DePauw

The early 2008 track season continued for Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam's track teams as they converged on DePauw University for the Hoosier Qualifier meet Saturday.

Going against teams from much larger schools, the local track and field participants had a strong day with four athletes finishing the event with third- place finishes.

Greencastle accounted for three of the four third- place finishes with two of those coming in the girls' events. D'Aundrea Williams was third in the shot put with a distance of 33-feet-six-inches while the 800-meter relay team members ran to their third place finish in a time of 1:54.17.

Also posting high finishes for the Tiger Cubs were Jamie Patterson with a fourth-place finish in the 55 meter with the time of 7.67 and the distance medley relay team with a fourth-place time of 14:16.33.

North Putnam's Casey Preecs jumped her way to a fourth-place spot in the high jump with a jump of 4-feet-10-inches. South Putnam's Shelby Johnston and the Tiger Cubs' Kerri Good finished tied for seventh in the high jump with a height of 4'8"

In boys' events, Greencastle's Jordan Lewis was third in the high jump with a jump of 6-foot while the Cougars' Jerret Ban leapt to a third place finish with a jump of 19-feet-10-inches in the long jump.

Greencastle had three strong finishes in the relays as the GHS 800 meter relay team ended the event with a top five finish, running a 1:40.11. The 1,600 team was sixth with a time of 3:52.55 while the 3,200 team was ninth, recording a time of 9:17.12

Greencastle will compete at the DePauw Indoor next Tuesday at 5 p.m., while North Putnam will take on Southmont at 4:30 p.m. March 31. Cloverdale opens its season at North Putnam with Eminence April 1 at 4:30 p.m. as South Putnam will travel to Northview to face the Knight and Owen Valley at 5 p.m. April 3.
