Tiger Cub track splits three-way meet with Southmont

The Greencastle track teams opened their outdoor seasons Tuesday with a triangular meet with Southmont and North Montgomery. Greencastle took the girls' meet, scoring 90 points to Southmont's 70 and North Montgomery's 12. The Mounties took the boys' meet, scoring 81 points to Greencastle's 81 and North Montgomery's 24.

The Lady Tiger Cubs took their share of top honors, with seniors Laura Weatherford and Erica Soster each taking two events. Weatherford won both the 200 and 400, while Soster won both hurdle events.

Sophomore Laura English came through with a surprising win in the long jump. It was her first time in the event since eighth grade. Becky Grivas won the high jump.

Dee Wood led a strong performance in the 100, placing first while teammates Jamie Patterson and English finished third and fourth, respectively.

Newcomer Rachel Winters won the discus with a throw of 80-feet-4-inches. Caitlyn Gannaway led a one-two-three finish in the shot put. D'Aundrea Williams was second and Hannah Deer, third.

The Tiger Cubs also won two relays. The 400 relay team of Wood, Weatherford, Patterson and English ran a 51.2. The 1,600 relay team of Melissa Ball, English, Hannah Serlin and Weatherford closed the meet with a victory.

"We had what is sometimes called an 'ugly' win," coach Garry Anderson said. "The tough temperature, wind and tough competition were hard to combat."

On the boys' side, GHS had four wins.

Buzz Deer picked up an individual win in the 300 hurdles. Jordan Lewis won the high jump while Nick Walkosak claimed the pole vault.

The 400 relay team of Teal, Eiteljorge, Marshall and Miller was also a winner.

Greencastle is back in action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at Owen Valley with the Patriots and Monrovia.
