Eagle tennis wins 5-0

South Putnam continued its hot start to the 2008 tennis season with a 5-0 victory over West Vigo Monday night.

Coach Johnnie Briones was especially happy with the way his No. 2 singles player and No. 1 doubles team "rose to the challenge" after dropping tough second sets.

At No. 2 singles, Whitney Warren defeated Taylor Brown 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Sam Callahan and Megan Klotz defeated Megan Jackson and Amanda Phillips 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Chelsea Clark won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Liz Mink won at No. 3 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Cassie Davis and Megan Criss won 6-4, 6-3.

"We're excited about starting the season 3-0," Briones said. "The whole team's feeling good, resulting in solid play."

The Eagle JV also won 6-2, highlighted by an 8-0 singles win by Patty Rodriguez.

The Eagles host Edgewood at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
