DePauw tennis teams make third-round exits

Women's tennis falls to denison

The Eighth-ranked DePauw women's tennis season came to an end in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship third round as the Tigers dropped a 5-1 decision to eighth-ranked Denison.

The Tigers finished the year at 22-5, while Denison advances to the Division III quarterfinals with a 20-3 mark.

Marta Drane and Kristin Cobb gave the Big Red the early lead after winning their number-one doubles match against DePauw's Erin Andrade and Kayla Smith by an 8-3 score, but DePauw's number-three tandem of Kristine Lewry and Greer Mackie defeated Erin Gorsich and Kara Zdanowski, 8-6.

The Big Red entered singles play with a 2-1 lead after its number two doubles team of Meghan Damico and Kendra Murray topped Janelle Arita and Kelly Buckley, 8-6.

Cobb defeated Buckley at number-two singles by a 6-3, 6-3 score before Damico beat Arita at number one 7-5, 6-2. Drane closed out the match with a third singles win over Mackie 6-3, 7-5.

The Tigers will be represented at the Division III singles and doubles championships as Arita and Buckley qualified in singles and Andrade and Smith did the same in doubles. Play starts May 16 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

DePauw closes the season 22-5 with a national ranking of number 8.

Host bears oust tiger men, 6-0

ST. LOUIS -- The 16th-ranked DePauw men's tennis season came to an end following a 6-0 loss to fifth-ranked Washington University in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship third round.

DePauw finished the season with a 19-7 record, while the Bears advanced to the national quarterfinals with an 18-4 record.

Washington took a 3-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Isaac Stein and Max Woods topped Cameron Nash and Hunter Schouweiler by an 8-2 score at the number three slot before Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland defeated Kortney Keith and Scott Swanson at number one by an 8-6 score.

The Bears' number-one duo of Nirmal Choradia and John Watts wrapped up doubles play with an 8-5 victory over Will Gates and Bryan Heck.

Woods defeated Scott Sauer at number-four singles by a 6-1, 6-0 score before Hoeland defeated Evan Hunter at number five by a 6-1, 6-3 count and Stein topped Gates, 6-3, 6-2 at number six.
