Rooker, Dahlstrom smash homers in Cougars win

Thursday, May 22, 2008

BAINBRIDGE -- North Putnam senior Kyle Rooker continues to assault baseballs in and around Putnam County this season. He collected his 13th home run of the season and added two doubles in the Cougars' 6-4 win over the Chargers.

"It was a pretty good ball game, we just made a few errors there early in the game and took ourselves out of an inning with a base running error. We just hung around and they had the best of us until the sixth," Cougars' head coach Norm Fish said.

North Putnam had to rally late in the game to pick up the win. Entering the sixth inning, the Cougars trailed by two runs. With creative base running and timely hitting the Cougars scored four run in the bottom of the sixth to take the game.

North Putnam used four pitchers to get the win. Jordan Berry, Griffen Dahlstrom, Tyler Watson and Rooker combined for the win.

Dahlstrom added a homer of his own, while Kyle Alcorn, Berry, Watson, C.J. Lofton and Darrick Wiatt all added hits.

Fish acknowledged the play of seniors Rooker, Berry, J.T. Francies and David Church as they helped North Putnam to a 20-win season.

Fish also commented on the slow start that has plagued the Cougars all season, and Wednesday was no exception. At this stage of the season, it's time to tighten everything up as tournament time approaches.

"We should be up four or five to nothing in the fourth inning and instead we're down 4-2 and scrambling to catch up," Fish commented. "I liked the way we finished; we came back and took care of business in the sixth.

"The goal is to get sharper on Friday and get ready for Monday," he concluded.

North Putnam will host Western Boone at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
