Family names and their meanings to be discussed

Thursday, June 5, 2008

Are you a Smith? Is your last name Harcourt? Have you ever wondered what your last name means, or questioned where it came from?

Surname research is often fascinating but may seem too complicated. Come and find answers to any questions you have at Putnam County Public Library (PCPL) Tuesday, June 10 at noon.

A Brown Bag Series event titled, "Hoosier Daddy: What's in your last name?" will focus on surname research using local, regional and online resources to find the origin and meaning of surnames.

Local professional genealogist Maggie Champion will lead this discussion of common surnames, their meaning and origin, and the evolution of last names.

Champion will focus on local names, many of which will be familiar to Putnam County residents. Additionally, she will conduct participants in online surname research.

PCPL staff will be on hand to share further resources and insights into genealogy research in the library as well as other resources in the greater Putnam County area.

Participants are invited to bring their lunch to the program, which will be in the Kiwanis Room at the library. Treats and drinks will be provided.

Registration is not required and this event is free to the public. For more information, please contact: Rajean Gallagher, 765-653-2755, ext. 113.
