Norman E. Evens

Norman E. Evens, 81, of Bainbridge died Saturday July 5, 2008 at Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette.

Mr. Evens was born on Oct. 3, 1926 in Putnam County to Ray Amos and Wilma Lucille Irwin Evens. He married Thursa Etcheson on April 6, 1948, and she survives.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He received a 4-H scholarship to Purdue University, where he received a degree in agriculture education and received his masters in high school administration from Indiana State University.

He was a vocational agriculture teacher at New Ross, Bainbridge and Amo high schools. He served as the last principal at Bainbridge High School and was vice principal and a guidance counselor at North Putnam High School.

He served as a 4-H leader for many years, and was an active member of Bainbridge Christian Church, where he had served as an elder, sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school.

He was also a former member of the Bainbridge Lions Club.

Also surviving are his children, Carol McFarland and husband, Richard of Paris, Ill., a son, Richard Evens and wife, Peggy of Maumee, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Cindy Jo Evens of Williamsport; sister, Marlene Masten of Greencastle; brother, Irwin Evens of Greenwood; and nine grandchildren, Lindsay Cagle and husband, Grant, Ashley Evens, Alyssa Evens, Derek McFarland and wife, Janelle, Ann McFarland, Kyle McFarland, Nicole Jernagan and husband, Jared, Katrina Evens and Ryan Evens and fiancée, Alexis.

His parents; a son, Robert Scot Evens; a sister, Loretta Stansbury and a brother, Marvin Evens preceded him in death.

Services will be private. Calling will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle.
