Greencastle school board delays decision on security officer

Thursday, July 24, 2008

The Greencastle Community School Board decided not to vote on hiring a first-of-its-kind security guard for the school corporation during a special meeting Wednesday night.

The board tabled the hiring of a law and safety officer until a later date.

According to board member Barbara Bryant, the board has not yet decided when this item will be discussed.

At the last school board meeting, Supt. Bob Green said an officer would be hired to oversee security for the corporation. He thought he would have a candidate's name to present to the board for hiring by this week's meeting.

On Wednesday, the board approved personnel matters for the 2008-2009 school year.

The board approved a leave of absence for Title One Instructor Jill Gooch.

According to Green, Gooch recently had a baby and will be taking a leave for the entire school year.

LeAnn Curvin was also hired as a new mathematics teacher at the high school. Curvin was previously employed by Eminence High School and is from Terre Haute.

Heather Cantonwine was also approved as the Jump Start program instructor. Cantonwine will replace Regina Ames who stepped down from the position.

  • Now they'll hire someone when no one is looking. They'll think we all forgot about it. How did the meeting actually go, was there alot of people there complaining? Nothing in print about the meeting as a whole! Way to go Banner Graphic!

  • Way to voice your opinions about an "ARMED SECURITY GUARD" citizens! It looks like our opinions did matter, they listened.....for now! I have one problem with this, were we informed about this special meeting being held and what will stop them from holding another special meeting to hire this "ARMED GUARD" without anyone knowing about it. Stay on top of this issue parents, don't forget about it! Look at my left hand while my right one is in your pocket.

  • I'd be interested in knowing if the school corporation has a safety/security plan. Also, is the response time for local law enforcement so slow that it warrants an on-site security officer? Would providing security make the school board liable if something should happen because they give an expectation of a secure environment by employing security personnel.

  • First of all, this position is for more than just securtiy of the students. It is about the education and prevention of drug abuse and violence. This position will also oversee transportation. Wake up people, we cannot wait until these issues are so bad and then try to stop them. The time is now, teach them while they are young and still forming morals. I have 4 children in the schools and I perfectly happy with the school board creating this position. However, I am very dissappointed that they have tabled it. They worked so hard to get it approved and to interview and even called a special meeting to approve an applicant to be hired before school starts only to table it? That does not make any sense?

  • It is not the schools responsibility to teach children right from wrong. Theya re there to attend classes, learn and pass tests. PARENTS should teach their children. And if they don't, it's still not up to the school administration and teachers to do the parents job. A SECURITY GUARD will oversee transportation? WhAAAATTTT? Heck, any uneducated idiot could do that. Why in the world would they need to be paying an officer to teach our children and then oversee transporation? Maybe if I had four or five children in school I would want someone else to take on the job of teaching them also!

  • Doctors treat the sick, police enforce the laws, judges hear the cases, parents should be raising the children and schools should teach. Schools are not the police, they sould not be the judge, they should let the doctors deal with all medical issues and treatments, they should let the parents displine the kids and get to teaching and teaching only. Why would you call the police and suspend a kid for a dip of skoll? Why send him to GRASP? GCSC has stepped way beyond where they should be. If they would focus on teaching maybe they could be a four or five star school system. And if they must have rules and enforce them then in the name of justice make them across the board and STOP excluding the chosen. In responce say what makes you feel better but that will not change that GHS is unfair in handing down punishment. Football, wrestling, scoccer and basketball get mostly a free pass, sure when pressured they will make a single example but then the others thick even more so they can do as they please when they please.

  • Yes, I agree that parents should teach their own children right from wrong, but the problem is too many parents choose not to do this and then their children pose problems for everyone else. This position has so many factors that will be great for GCSC, and it is sad that so many do not see this. Maybe the school corp. should make public the actual purpose and idea of this position
