Lady Tiger Cubs fall in season-opening match

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

The Greencastle girls' golf team dropped its first match of the season, falling to Monrovia 224-234 Monday.

"This is pretty much what I expected for our first match," GHS head coach Brad Kingma said. "We have a young team with four sophomores and a freshman, so we should be able to see some good improvement as the year goes on."

Chelsea Samuels led the Tiger Cubs with 45, while Diane Wokoun and Hedge both shot 59. Kristen Hutcheson carded a 71 and Kay Wood finished the round with 73.

"Samuels putted better today than she did last year, but she was inconsistent in ball striking," Kingma commented. "She should be able to work on getting that straightened out with some more time on the range."

Kingma also acknowledged that the team is making a lot more shots than last year and he thinks that will be a good base to work from. As always, putting is something that was on the coach's mind.

"We will need to work on converting a higher percentage of our short putts," Kingma said.

Greencastle will compete at the Terre Haute South Invitational at Rea Park at 10 a.m. Aug. 12.
