Man sends belated thanks to kind stranger

To the Editor:

This is for one particular person who lives in Greencastle: Thanks for your help.

This comes a few years late, around 20 years, maybe more.

I was traveling from Indianapolis back to Memphis with my wife and daughter when my car stopped running. I had the hood up and after checking a few things, found the fuel pump not pumping gas. A man pulled up and asked if he could help.

I asked if he knew where I could get a new fuel pump, and without hesitation he drove me to a local auto parts store, which had just closed. He said he had another idea and we drove to his home, where he removed the fuel pump from his own truck.

We drove back to my car, I installed the pump and it worked fine. My car was a 1955 Chevrolet. I offered to pay him for the pump and his trouble, and he refused. He gave me his name and address, and told me to write and let him know I made it home.

Well, unfortunately I lost the paper he gave me, and have been unable to contact him. If he reads this, I hope he knows we got home fine, 20-some years ago.
