Clovers take second at Crawfordsville
CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Cloverdale volleyball team went 2-1 Saturday on its way to a second-place finish in the Crawfordsville Tournament.
The Clovers (5-2) defeated Crawfordsville in their first match, fell to Northview in their second and defeated Southmont in the final match of the round robin to claim second.
"During the Crawfordsville tournament we picked up two wins against some tough competition," CHS coach Kathy Moore said. "We played Crawfordsville in our first match of the day and beat them two games to one."
The Clovers defeated the Athenians 21-25, 27-25 and 25-20. Allie Franklin led the Clover servers with 11 points, while Kristin McCammon picked up three aces. McCammon also led at the net, with seven kills. Maria Skiles had 11 assists.
Defensively, Whitney Bond had 14 blocks, while Franklin had 26 digs.
In game two, the Clovers lost to Northview in straight games, 25-20 and 25-18.
"Northview was another story; we played well in the first game then went flat in the second," Moore commented. "We need to decrease the number of free balls and unforced errors during our matches.
McCammon led the service attack with five points, while three different Clovers had one ace each. Skiles and Kaileigh Sparks each had six assists, while Bond picked up six kills.
Elizabeth Cheatham had eight blocks for the Clovers, and McCammon had 19 digs.
In another hard-fought contest, the Clovers closed the day with a three-game win over Southmont, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23.
"In our third match we played Southmont and beat them two games to one," the coach said. "We ended the day 2-1 and placed second to a good Northview team."
In the Southmont match, Skiles had 13 points, 10 assists and two aces. McCammon also added two aces. Cheatham and Franklin each had five kills. Cheatham also led with 17 blocks. McCammon led the way with 30 digs.
The Clovers host Turkey Run at 6 p.m. today.
