GHS runners win

Friday, September 12, 2008

The Greencastle cross country teams hosted West Vigo Thursday night. The Vikings did not have enough runners to field a team, so the Lady Tiger Cubs won easily.

No results were available for the boys' meet.

While there were no team scores to compare, GHS coach Garry Anderson said there were many bright spots for his squad.

"Every girl improve her time from the first time she ran on the course at the DePauw Nature Center," Anderson said. "This is very encouraging as we head into the middle and latter part of the schedule. I was impressed by the ability of each girl to finish strongly and cut time off her previous best on the course."

Sara Culler led the Cubs (2-0), winning the race in a time of 22:38. Jasmine Dwigans was next, with a time of 22:59. Kaitlyn Murtagh (23:13) placed third.

It wasn't just the front runners who did well for the Tiger Cubs, though. Anderson complimented his next three on their push to complete the pack.

"The threesome of Emily Gill, Felicia Barger and Ivonne Martinez is really making a nice finish to aid the front three. This is a tight pack that is getting better and better," Anderson said.

Gill (24:01), Barger (24:10) and Martinez (24:34) came home in fifth, sixth and seventh.

Olivia Humphreys finished 10th for the Tiger Cubs in 25:36, while Brittany Johnson was 11th in a time of 29:30.

Greencastle travels to the Cascade Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
