Cloverdale wins tough contest on the road against Monrovia

Friday, September 19, 2008

MONROVIA -- The Cloverdale volleyball team went on the road and picked up a tough conference win on Thursday, defeating Monrovia in five games, 25-22, 13-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-11.

The win moves Cloverdale's record to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the WCC.

"This was a hotly-contested match; no one wanted to lose this one," Clover coach Kathy Moore said.

Kristin McCammon and Maria Skiles both had big nights for the Clovers, as McCammon led with 13 points, five kills, 21 digs and three aces. Skiles was just behind with 12 points and was also the co-leader with nine assists.

Kaileigh Sparks also had nine assists, while Elizabeth Cheatham and Alesha Evans each picked up nine blocks.

No strangers to big games in sectionals or county tourneys, the Clovers remained cool as this WCC matchup went into the fifth game.

"We did a good job of handling the pressure in game five," Moore said. "It was very loud and rowdy, and the girls did their part to win this important conference match."

The Clover JV also won in two games.

Cloverdale is back in action next Thursday when they host North Putnam at 6 p.m.
