Tiger Cub eighth grade completes unbeaten season
SPEEDWAY -- It was a perfect end to a perfect season Wednesday night, as the Greencastle Middle School eighth grade team defeated Speedway, who had also entered the action unbeaten, 14-8.
Trailing 8-0 at the half, the Tiger Cubs shut out the Sparkplug in the second half. They scored with less than a minute to go on third, on a 25-yard pass from a fourth-and-12.
Speedway drove the length of the field and then turned the ball over on downs to the Cubs. GHS had a 60-yard run that got them to the one-yard line. They punched it in with1:21 to go in the contest.
A defensive stand sealed the victory for GHS.
The Tiger Cubs finish the season 9-0 and head into their high school careers showing a lot of promise.
"Our eighth grade team has won a lot of close, hard-fought games this season," said coach Jarrod Duff. "Undefeated seasons don't happen very often, so they should really feel good about how they went about things this season."
It was a slightly tougher night for the GMS seventh graders, as they fell to Sparkplugs 36-6, bringing their final record to 5-3-1.
"I was also pleased with our seventh grade team this season. We ended the year with a couple of tough losses, but this team really came a long way from the beginning of the season," Duff concluded.
With that in mind, it should be pointed out that any complaints with the story are actually complaints with the coach, as that is who submits them. Coach Duff deserves none of this. He has been one of our most faithful contributors throughout the fall, and the parents of these kids should be thanking him for what he has done to promote their efforts during the season.
I am certainly appreciative to him and all the coaches who submit. They help us more than we could ever begin to express.
I'd also like to thank "hoopdreams" for his or her positive comments. That is the kind of attitude any team sport deserves.
The one coach in this county who is a hall of famer never comments on individual performances, and that kind of thinking has helped him guide teams to 680 wins over a 45-year basketball career.
