Tigers pick up sixth victory
SHERMAN, Texas -- DePauw scored on its final two first half possession and the first two of the second half on the way to a 31-28 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Austin College.
DePauw improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC with the victory, while the Kangaroos dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
"I was especially proud of the fight our team displayed today," head coach Matt Walker said.
"We play in a competitive, tough conference and each week is a battle. We fought hard today."
Austin jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first after Scooter Means scored on an 8-yard run with 6:30 left and capping the Kangaroos' opening drive.
Early in the second, DePauw's Jordan Havercamp was called upon for a 32-yard field goal attempt, but the Tigers were whistled for a false start. Austin's Matt Finke then blocked Havercamp's 37-yard attempt.
Austin took advantage and drove to the DePauw 1, but Ryan Huffman stopped Andy Braly and Means, on both third and fourth down, respectively.
After a pair of Jon Ellis runs netted two yards, Dick tossed a third-down screen pass to Ellis and the freshman streaked down the left sideline before cutting across the field. Alex Koors delivered a block which allowed Ellis to take it in for a 97-yard score. Havercamp's point-after knotted the score at 7-7 with 4:54 remaining in the half.
On the ensuing series, the Kangaroos drove to the Tigers' 4 before Tyler Doane sacked Braly for a 10-yard loss on third down. Jonathan Hersh's 31-yard field goal try was wide to the right.
Starting from his own 20 and with 1:29 left in the half, Dick completed four of five passes and drove the Tigers to the 3. On third down Dick teamed with Bryan Mulligan for the score which gave DePauw a 13-7 lead with just six seconds left in the half.
After the Tigers stopped Austin on the opening drive of the second half, Mulligan returned a punt 45 yards to the Austin 18. Four plays later, Ellis made it 20-7 on a 1-yard run.
The hosts quickly responded as Zach Mamot scored on a 49-yard run with 9:29 left in the third, but the Tigers extended the lead to 28-14 on Dick's 2-yard pass to Mitchell Willsey and a two-point conversion toss to Mulligan with 6:42 remaining in the quarter.
Early in the fourth, Austin drove to the DePauw 4, but again the defense kept the hosts out of the end zone on fourth-and-goal with Michael McNelis and Huffman credited with the stop of Matt Burton.
Austin closed the gap to 28-21 on Braly's 17-yard pass to Ed Amerson with 9:32 left which capped a seven-play, 62-yard drive. DePauw, however, put together a 12-play, 46-yard possession over the next 6:41 with Havercamp nailing a 38-yard field goal with 2:44 remaining and pushing the lead to 31-21.
Braly tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Ross Hasten with 54 seconds left to trim the Tigers' lead to 31-28, but Steve Valdiserri recovered the onside kick and the Tigers were able to run out the clock.
Dick completed 21 of 33 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. His 321 total offense yards pushed his career total to 5,978 which broke the school record of 5,754 held by Jeff Voris (1986-89). Dick's 5,982 career passing yards are just 53 shy of Voris' school-record 6,035.
Ellis rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries and caught three passes for 131 yards for 213 all-purpose yards. Chris Gasbarra caught five for 50 yards, while Brayden Dahlstrom and Koors finished with three each.
Braly completed 13 of 25 passes for 162 yards and two scores and rushed for 71 yards on 16 tries. Mamot paced the rushing attack with 91 yards and a score. Evan Coachman finished with eight catches for 100 yards. Austin outgained the Tigers 458-415 including a 296-96 advantage on the ground.
Tarren Collins led the DePauw defense with eight tackles, while Stacy Crawford, Marc Hoeppner and Huffman each had seven. Crawford and Valdiserri each finished with two pass breakups. Andy Stowe led Austin with 10 tackles and Means totaled seven. Finke and Nick Youngblood each had two breakups.
DePauw wraps up SCAC play next Saturday when it hosts Rhodes at 1 p.m.
