George E. York
George E. York, 80, of Vincennes and formerly of Greencastle, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 at his residence.
Born July 20, 1928 in Putnam County, he was the son of Earon Sylvester & Laura Mae (McDonald) York. He married Rubyanne Parker on June 25, 1949 and she preceded him in death on March 12, 1991. He married Peggy Archbold Beard on Nov. 23, 1991 and she survives.
Mr. York had been a truck driver with Schwerman Trucking for 30 years. After retirement he had owned R&M Bicycle Sales and worked part-time for Humphrey's Outdoor Power Equipment, Greencastle. He was a member of the Vincennes First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge #1592, Greencastle.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Beard York; a daughter, Nancy Knapp and husband Carl of Greencastle; a son, Michael York and wife Cheryl of Greencastle; a stepdaughter, Julie Earley of Vincennes; a brother, Forrest York of Greencastle; four sisters, Geraldine Smiley, Barbara Black and husband Ray, Sharon Sheldon and husband Jerry, all of Greencastle, and Zola Jones of Minnesota; eight grandchildren, John and Amy York of Greencastle, Angie and Jacob Garl of Greencastle, Dan Knapp of New Mexico, Corie and Rodney Burnett of Florida, Jordan and Alyssa York of Greencastle, Katie and Jim Kirton of Kansas, and Brandon Bond of Vincennes; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Rubyanne York and three brothers Bill, John and Leroy York.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with the Rev. John Groves officiating. Burial will be in the Putnamville Cemetery
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Friday with a Moose Lodge Memorial walk through at 7 p.m.
