Roachdale Elementary kids got high fives from the "Kids Night Out" Knight last week. The Knight visited the school along with the 2008 Coats for kids committee who threw an ice cream party for the school for collecting the most coats.

Roachdale Elementary School kids got a nice surprise Wednesday afternoon with an ice cream party and visit from the "Kids Night Out" Knight. The school donated the most coats of any of the county schools for the Coats for Kids campaign.

"Even without knowing there was a contest, you still brought in the most coats from any other school," Principal Helen Blubaum proudly told students.

Over 600 coats were collected for the campaign overall and were distributed at Harris Hall at the Putnam County Fairgrounds on Nov. 15.

"I know Becky Brothers stopped counting coats after 675," said Coats for Kids committee member Linda Merkel.

All four committee members for the Coats for Kids campaign visited Roachdale to congratulate students on collecting the most coats of any county school.

Members of the committee are Brothers, Patti Harmless, Merkel and Matt Demmings. Bobby Harper, President of the Youth Development Commission was inside the Knight costume.

Many businesses, individuals, schools and industries all contributed to the Coats for Kids campaign. This program provides coats at no cost to kids who need them. Kids also received hats and gloves as well as hot chocolate and cookies when they picked out their coats.

Next year's campaign will kick off in early August.
