Cougar swim teams place second

ROACHDALE -- Thursday night the North Putnam swim teams hosted a triangular meet against the Chargers of North Montgomery, and the Warriors of Covenant Christian.

The North Putnam girls and boys both placed second among their competition.

The Cougar girls scored 80 points to North Montgomery's 156 and Covenant Christian's 74. Katie Wilcox won the girls' 50 free with a time of 26.94 by out touching both North Montgomery challengers close at hand.

The Cougar boys scored 97 points to North Montgomery's 146 and Covenant Christian's 14. Jeremy Ban was the winner of two individual events. He won the boys 50 free with a time of 24.11 and then won the boys 500 free with a time of 5:49.08. In the 500, Ban surpassed his competition by several yards.

Jon Taggart won the boys 100 free with a time of 57.40. This was accomplished by out touching his competitor from North Montgomery, Todd Mellish, who came in at a close second with less than a second behind Taggart.

Justin Zurawski came in first in the boys 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.62 and beat out his closest competition, Taylor Harmon from North Montgomery, by just over 10 seconds.

Part of this is due to the fact that North Montgomery teams each had two divers where North Putnam and Covenant Christian had none. When asked about diving, Coach Wes Richardson stated that they are working on diving.

Despite losing the meets, Coach Richardson stated, " I think they did well. We had some personal bests, but there is always room for improvement."

When questioned on the personal bests from the evening, Coach Richardson let it be known that "more than three fourths of the team had personal bests."

Among the North Putnam winners were K. Wilcox in the girls 50 freestyle, J. Ban in the boys 50 freestyle and the boys 500 freestyle, Jon Taggart in the boys 100 freestyle, and J. Zurawski in the boys 100 breaststroke.
