Eagle swimmers battle Chargers

Monday evening the Eagles swim teams hosted North Montgomery. The South Putnam boys lost to the Chargers by a mere two points, 93-91. The girls also lost to North Montgomery with a score of 113-59.

Contributing to this loss was the depth the Chargers held over the Eagles. Even if a team is able to win every event, they would still end up losing when their competitor can fill all three of their lanes.

Despite the loss, the South Putnam girls and boys both did well in both swimming and diving.

"Today was good. They swam a little tired, but that is nothing that I didn't expect since we had conference on Saturday and did so well there," stated Coach Emily Coers. "Our times continue to be consistent and/or drop. So, I am happy with their performance."

When asked about the divers' performance for the evening, Coach Adam O'Neal stated that they all had done well.

"Alyssia (Lollar) definitely had a new high score for herself. Wadim (Halik) stepped up to the challenge today, and has shown a lot of improvement. Thomas (Butts) is throwing in harder dives and is getting a lot better. And Sam (Gould) is getting better at his dives and is challenging himself each meet," O'Neal said.

The girls had a total of two winners on the evening. The first winner for the girls was Lollar in diving with a score of 152.80. The other was Sarah New in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:19.24.

The boys won a total of seven of twelve events. Wes Albright had a total of three first-place finishes on the night. The first of which was the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:12.56. His next win was in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:56.94.

His last win for the night came in the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Other contributors to the relay win were Matt Huck, Loren Ashcraft, and Chris Smiley. Their winning time was 3:53.57.

Smiley was also awarded a first in the 100-yard freeestyle where he swam a 54.75. Darrick Grundlock won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:33.99.

Sam Gould won diving with a score of 167.30. Jake Gould won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:17.43 with brother, Sam, coming in second.

Another gripping event was the boys' 200-yard free relay. South Putnam came in second, but for anyone who was watching, it was a great race. The first two swimmers were trading off who was in first, but then on the third leg of the race, the Eagles took the lead. Then on the last leg of the race, South Putnam dove in and a few seconds behind was the last leg of the North Montgomery relay. It was a good race between the last two for each team, but North Montgomery's anchor was quite tall and this was his advantage over South Putnam. This race was proof of how competitive the meet was between the two teams.

South Putnam will next be in action when they host Owen Valley Thursday at 6 p.m.
