Eagles place first, second at tri-meet

The South Putnam swim teams welcomed Owen Valley and Edgewood Thursday. The boys won their event with a total of 139, while the girls finished second behind Edgewood with 112.

"I thought we performed very well," South Putnam head coach Emily Coers said "We came out with a lot of enthusiasm, which I was really happy to see this far into the season . They're still cheering each other on and going out with a lot of passion and working hard."

The boys came out strong and thoroughly dominated the meet. They collected the top spot in 10-of-12 events, including all three relays, en route to their win.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Darrick Grundlock, Matt Huck, Loren Ashcraft and Jake Gould began the Eagles' successful evening by capturing the event with a time of 2:00.36.

Grundlock also took top honors in the 200-yard IM (2:29.16) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.38). Wes Albright won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:11.13, with Chris Smiley winning the 50-yard freestyle in the time of 25.16. Jake Gould also picked up a win in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:15.62, while Ashcraft won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.81.

Ashcraft, Smiley, Huck and Trent Vickrey teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:45.11, while Vickrey and Smiley partnered with Albright and Andrew Kelly to take the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 4:02.88. Sam Gould dove his way to first place with a six-dive total of 174.5.

For the girls, Tabitha Arnold was the only swimmer to finish ahead of the field on the night. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a time 2:25.53.

The Eagles had multiple swimmers end the night with second place finishes. Chelsea Vance (200 IM), Sarah New (100 backstroke), Jessica York (100 backstroke) and Allysia Lollar (diving) all had second place nights. The 200 medley relay team (2:16.00) of New, York, Kate Sherwood and Amanda Lund; the 200-yard free relay (1:59.13) of Sherwood, Arnold, Lund and Vance and the 400 free relay team (4:45.82) of Arnold, New, Sherwood and Lund had second place finishes as well.

Of her team's performance, Coers was pleased after the contest. She stated that she couldn't have asked for any more than what they put forth on Thursday evening.

Looking forward to their Tuesday matchup with Mooresville and beyond, Coers wants the team to continue to improve and build on what they have already accomplished so far this season.

Eagle senior Brittany Cox competes in the 500-yard freestyle event Thursday. Her time of 7:27.44 was good enough for a third place finish on the night.

"We just need to keep up the momentum that we have, you don't want to loss that. I think going into sectional we look good and we just need to keep working hard," she commented.

The Eagles will host Mooresville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
