Kindergarten orientation scheduled at South Putnam elementaries

Friday, March 6, 2009

The annual South Putnam Community School Corporation kindergarten orientation for the 2009-2010 school year has been scheduled for April 7,8 and 9 at the South Putnam elementary schools -- Central, Reelsville and Fillmore.

Students and parents are encouraged to attend the orientation session at the school of fall enrollment. Attendance during the entire two and one-half hour session is recommended. There will be a variety of information provided and activities are on the agenda.

A child must be five years of age before Aug. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten next school year.

To be eligible for first grade, a child must be six years old on or before Aug. 1, except those children who attended a year of kindergarten in another school district.

During the orientation session, a preschool screening check will be administered to each child. All children must be screened before being admitted to kindergarten for the first time.

Children who are not screened during orientation will be screened the first week of fall enrollment.

Parents must be present with the child's birth certificate and immunization record as required by law. (An official birth certificate may be obtained from the Board of Health in the county where the child was born.) In addition, the child's Social Security number is requested.

These records will be copied and returned.

Each school is taking a survey to determine the number of students who will be participating in orientation. Notify the school if there is a child who will be entering school this fall.
