Melvin L. Gaston, 75, of Greencastle died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at his residence.

Born Aug. 30, 1933 in Cloverdale, he was the son of Harris and Mildred Henson Gaston. He was a 1951 graduate of Cloverdale High School. He married JoEllen "Jody" Alexander and she survives.

Mr. Gaston was retired from the U.S. Post Office, having been a rural route carrier (RT#3) until 2002. Previously, he was the distribution manager for Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc. for Putnam County and managed the Sherwin Williams Store in Greencastle for 14 years.

He was a member of the Cloverdale Church of Christ, a former member of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge #1592 and Charter President of the Greencastle Optimist Club. He was a United States Army Veteran and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; children, Leah Buis and husband Vern of Greencastle, James Gaston and wife Diana of Elkton, Md., Cindy Evens and husband Samuel of Greencastle and John Gaston and wife Suanne of Terre Haute; a brother, Charles Gaston and wife Lois of Cloverdale; a sister, Evelyn Lurcott and husband Edwin of Downingtown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Berniece Coe; and a brother, James Gaston.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with A.J. Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4to 8 p.m. Friday.
