Frederick Armstrong Sanders

Frederick "Ted" Armstrong Sanders, 89, died Monday, March 30, 2009.

Mr. Sanders grew up in Steubenville, Ohio and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and graduated from DePauw University.

Following a 30-year career in the United States Air Force, he retired in 1970 as a colonel. His military decorations include the Air Force Medal with four gold clusters and the Air Force Legion of Merit.

In 1951, Col. Sanders initiated the Air Force ROTC department at DePauw University and led the unit until 1955. This established a lifelong connection with DePauw.

Beginning in 1970, Sanders was appointed associate director of development at DePauw University. In October 1971, he became director of development and alumni services. His title was changed to director of development in 1975. He retired from DePauw in 1987 having also served as director of planned giving.

He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Greencastle and was a member of the Putnam County Foundation Founders' Club. In Indianapolis, he was a member of the Service Club.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Sandenburgh Sanders of Indianapolis; daughters Sharon Sanders Gammon and husband James and Susan Sanders Harmless and husband Michael, all of Greencastle; three grandchildren, Bradley Garner of Lebanon, Shannon Rotvold of Indianapolis and Heather Donegan of Indianapolis; six great-grandchildren; and brother Robert Elwood Sanders of Stowe, Vt.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick Pearce Sanders and Lucile McCoy Sanders and a brother, Maurice Day Sanders.

The family will gather for a private memorial luncheon.
