Lady Tiger Cubs, North Putnam splits three-way with Athenians

Friday, April 24, 2009

ROACHDALE -- For the Lady Tiger Cubs, Thursday's track meet at North Putnam was nothing more than routine, but for the boys squad it was a wake call.

The girls' team dominated Thursday, finishing first with 114 points while the Cougars came in third with 47 points. North Putnam won the boys meet with 58 points, while Crawfordsville finished second with 50 points and GHS third with 47.

"I feel like that if the whole team had put the intensity into the entire meet that they did in the last event, things would have been different," GHS Coach Mike Schimpf said.

The boys' competition came down to the final race, the 1,600 meter relay. The Cougars jumped out in front on the first leg and held on strong for the rest of the race, and Greencastle nearly overtook the Cougars in the final 100 meters of the race; but North Putnam held on for the win.

"Everybody knew that it was going to come down to the last race and whichever team won the race was going to win the meet," Schimpf said, "And to tell you the truth if we would have won, I don't think that we would have deserved it.

"I'm happy for North Putnam and Jim Spencer. He has brought this program a long way," Schimpf said. "Some guys just need to step up on this team."

North Putnam walked away with six first-place finishes and went 1,2,3 in the Discus event.

Seth Vondersaar won the discus throwing 134-feet while Kyle Everts and Josh Keyt finished in second and third. After the Discus, Keyt walked over to the shot put ring and threw 46-feet-3-inches for the blue ribbon. In the running events, Jerrett Ban and Ken Quisenberry won the individual events for North Putnam. Ban won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.25 while Quisenberry finished first in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 4:59.97. The Cougars' relay teams also won in the 400 and 1,600 meter races.

"I was really pleased with the way we competed in all of our events," NPHS boys coach Jim Spencer said. "I think all three teams had different lineups than usual tonight. We had some kids leave because of an academic banquet and the other teams had people hurt, but it was a great and fun meet.

"I think we did a really good job in the events we ran in tonight," Spencer added.

Greencastle finished the meet with four first place finishes. In the field events, Jordan Hickam won the long jump, leaping 18-feet-9.75-inches. In the running events the Tiger Cubs won the 400, 800 and 3,200 meter races. In the 400, Kyle Harlan won with a time of 54.85 while Cameron Cash won the 800 with a time of 2:16. Jordan Lewis took home the gold in the two-mile race, finishing with a time of 10:52.

"We did have some bright spots tonight," Schimpf said. "Greg Lilly nearly broke the school record in the 110 hurdles."

In the girls meet, Greencastle won every event except two. They finished second in the 400 meters behind Crawfordsville and did not run in the 100 meter hurdles.

"I wasn't expecting any kind of spectacular performances tonight," GHS girls' coach Garry Anderson said. "I wanted some good performances, but I wasn't expecting anything huge because they are pretty sore right now from the weight room."

Anderson wasn't expecting any huge performances, but that didn't mean he didn't enjoy them when they happened, like when Hannah Deer through a personal best of 104-feet-2-inches in the discus, winning the event.

"Hannah Deer was the biggest standout of the night," Anderson said "That was a personal best for her, and give us time and we will have a couple more girls throwing over 100 feet and I think that Hannah can go even further."

Even though the Lady Cougars failed to win a single event, their coach, Kevin Lutes, was pleased with the effort.

"We didn't get a lot of points tonight," Lutes said. "Greencastle is just a phenomenal team and Crawfordsville is right up there too. But as far as effort goes, I think these girls came and put out some good effort towards the meet."

Greencastle travels to West Vigo Tuesday for a 5 p.m. meet while North Putnam will travel to Rockville on Monday for a 4:30 p.m meet.
