Powerful first half too much for Tiger Cubs to overcome

GREENCASTLE -- When Scott Weltz talked to his team Thursday night after they lost to Plainfield, 5-1, it wasn't the kind of talk most players would expect . Instead of getting chewed out, the Lady Tiger Cubs got an uplifting, encouraging speech.

"These girls played well," Weltz said. "They played an awesome Plainfield team. That team was doing things that we hope to be doing later in our season."

Weltz knew coming into the game with Plainfield it was going to be a tough one.

"As a coach you come into a game knowing you want to win and you play to win," Weltz said. "That doesn't mean you don't realize the potential that the other team has.

"We haven't peaked yet," Weltz said. "We are still learning our new formation and the pace of our passes, but we gave them a tough match and made them work for it and that's part of it too."

Plainfield had a 3-0 lead at the half, but nine minutes into the second half, Laura English cut that lead to two when she scored on a direct kick.

"That's her second goal of the season like that," Weltz said. "She just has a rocket for a left leg."

Shortly following English's goal, Plainfield's offense turned up the pressure and scored two more goals less than two minutes apart for the final.

"Plainfield showed us what we need to be doing by the end of the year, like spacing," Weltz said. "If you noticed their front and back lines were scrunched in tight and all their passes were 10-12 yards out. Everything was on the ground, nice and crisp. That is the direction we are wanting to go."

Greencastle is now 1-3 on the season and takes on Mooresville on the road Saturday at Noon.
