Friday, October 2, 2009

GREENCASTLE -- In the final home game of their high school soccer careers, the Tiger Cub seniors put on a dominating performance Thursday at Dee Monnett Field.

The starting seniors included Derrick Thompson, Nate Jones, Luke Smith, Steven Miller, David Cath and Josh Dunn.

The Tiger Cubs controlled the ball for most of the first half and held a 3-1 advantage at the break. Spencer Moore put the Cubs ahead at 32:24 when he blasted a shot past the Cadets keeper Avery Franklin.

The Cadets brought the score back to even when the Tiger Cubs failed to clear the ball on a pass back to keeper Kyle Parker. Parker's kick deflected off a sliding Michael Ferguson and into the Tiger Cubs goal for what would prove to be the lone goal on the night for the visitors.

Greencastle regained the lead when Josh Bonebrake scored on a nice header with 9:13 remaining in the half. Brandon Query served him the assist. Senior Josh Dunn ripped a shot into the back corner of the goal with 2:27 to play in the half, assisted by Cody Watson.

The seniors and their families were recognized for their contributions to GHS athletics by AD Scott Knapp during a brief ceremony at halftime.

The Tiger Cubs came out in the second half and quickly extended their lead when Bonebrake scored his second goal of the evening off an assist by freshman Evan Smith with 37:28 to play. Cath added another goal at 34:21, with an assist from Spencer Moore, to put the score at 5-1.

With the win, the Tiger Cubs improve their season record to 10-2-3. They will travel to Owen Valley on Monday to take on the Patriots in varsity action at 5 p.m.
