Gaylord H. Stewart, 74 of Knightsville died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

He was born May 24, 1935 in Illinois, the son of Jesse and Eva Vanningham Stewart. As a young man, he worked on the railroad and then later drove a dump truck for the zinc mill in Greencastle. He later worked for Greencastle Manufacturing and last worked as a prison guard for the Plainfield Correctional Facility, retiring in 1998.

As a young man, Mr. Stewart enjoyed fishing and he has always loved dogs, cats and all animals. He liked to joke and have the last laugh and be with family.

Survivors include his wife Linda Kay McShanog, whom he married March 14, 1980; six children, Randy Stewart (Terry) of Kansas City, MO, Debbie Watson (Gene), Rebecca "Becky" Reed (Paul) of Greencastle, Scott Atkinson (Kim) of Knightsville, Todd Atkinson of Brazil and Bill Atkinson of Knightsville; five grandchildren, Melissa, Brian, Shelby, Casey and Cassidy; five great-grandchildren, Kris, A.J., Aleah, Kylee and Skyler; one brother, Norman Stewart (Betty) of Greencastle; three sisters, Sandy Bible (Paul) of New Mexico, Imogene Stewart of Wyoming and Joanne Schuck of Greencastle; sister-in-law, June Stewart of Jacksonville, Fla.; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Conrad "Connie" Stewart; two grandsons, T.J. Atkinson and Jeffrey Stewart; and his first wife Betty Louise Noll Stewart.

At his request, cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held Monday at 8 p.m. at the Benwood Mt. Lebanon Church 945 E. Co. Rd. 1200N, Brazil with Pastor Dick McShanog officiating. Calling with the family will be from 6 p.m. to time of service, also at the church.
