Tiger Sharks roll over Vikings

GREENCASTLE -- Greencastle's boys' and girls' swim teams kept humming right along, picking up a pair of wins in a midweek dual meet with West Vigo on Wednesday. The Tiger Sharks took all but three events on the evening, though the beginning of the meet started off a bit rocky.

"Our enthusiasm coming into the meet was a little low," said Greencastle head coach Luke Beasley. "We challenged the upperclassmen to step up and challenge the team. They responded well in the back half of the meet. They had that desire and excitement back, even though they were a little fatigued. With the divers, we said that there was never a meet where we wanted wasted effort. We are looking for continual improvement and good performances."

The opening event on the boys side saw the winning side DQ'd before all was said and done, and even though Greencastle still won the event, it prompted some of the charges.

"We got caught in an exchange where (Jay) Guffey got caught in between making one more stroke or going in, and (Walter) Chiarella was already moving. Guffey made the extra stroke and Chiarella couldn't stop," Beasley explained.

The rest of the meet was far more to Beasley's liking.

"Even for a midweek meet we had lots of great performances, season and personal bests from the girls. Melissa Ball had season bests in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Sarah Beams matched a season best in the 100 fly and also won the 200 free, an event she was participating in for the first time. Katie Hedge also had a great day in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke, hitting season bests in both. Allison Howard also had a personal best in the 100 free."

The boys team was not exempt from praise. "Luke Smith got two personal bests in the 200 IM and 100 free. Mitchell Ball got a good victory in the 100 breaststroke. We also had a great race from Walter Chiarella and Jay Guffey in the 500 free. They maybe didn't start as fast as we would have liked, but they stayed close to one another the entire way and had an exciting finish. West Vigo did win one race (the 100 backstroke) but even then we had a personal best. So, if a personal best still doesn't do it, that's alright, because the effort was there."

With the great performances comes the realization that the sectionals are quickly approaching, with the girl's sectional in two weeks and the boy's sectional a week after. This was not lost on Coach Beasley.

"At this point, with two weeks before the sectional, we can't treat both teams the same way. The intensity of the practices for the girls will began to be pulled back, so that they can feel rested and recovered for the sectional. Right now we have to focus on individual attention in some areas. We need to have the right training for everyone."
